Interesting Coincidence or Just Stereotype?  


As former resident of the south for 14 years, where I raised my kids up through elementary school, I always resisted the idea that the south was "different". Sure folks still remembered the War Against Northern Aggression down there, much more so than seemed reasonable, and I did encounter a very real resistance to Carpetbaggers like myself, though for the most part I personally enjoyed a waiver on that.

...Apparently the south has risen again, and it's about gotten to the point where it is calling the shots in our country.

The Aftermath 


She picked up on the common interpretation that the election was won by "Faith and Moral Values", by winning those who place values, notably faith-based values, above everything else.

...There are a whole lot of people who believe that giving tax cuts to the rich and a deficit to the grandkids is a matter of values. There are a whole lot who put our faith, secular and sacred, in the most religiously diverse country in the world."

...Basically, we use them to justify our preferences, and we ignore them when it suits us. Especially, we take refuge in the time-honored practice of defining our adversaries as "evil".

...We need our citizenry to be as committed to our national ideals of government as they evidently are to their diverse religious values. And above all, we need to bring to the forefront the tolerance of those diverse personal religious values.

Hitchens backs Kerry!  


Well, actually, it turns out that Slate got it wrong. The piece that Hitchens wrote was so obtuse that they thought perhaps it was a Kerry endorsement. In a correction, they have now listed Hitchens as having no choice of candidate. Ah well...

Self-Defense 


Given that Saddam is well known to be an evil wrong-doer to his own people, the calculation appears to have been that one could not go wrong in this situation by harming him, even if it turned out that he had no strategic weapons, and was not colluding with al Qaeda.
