To those of you who actually cook:
Here is a new way to prepare your Thanksgiving or Christmas Turkey.
1. Cut out aluminum foil in desired shapes.
2. Arrange the turkey in the roasting pan, position the foil carefully.
3. Roast according to your own recipe and serve.
4. Watch your guests' faces...
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Sept 2002: Back to School
Tom visited with colleague Robert Winglee at the University of Washington, traveling on 9/11, along with colleague Mei-Ching Fok. The photo was taken on the shady campus next to the Geophysics building. The distant view contains Mt. Rainier, but you'd never know it because it is so overexposed. UW didn't start classes for a couple of weeks after this, so the campus looks pretty empty, but was truly beautiful. We spent all our time holed up in the Geophysics Program Computer Lab, except for a delicious seafood dinner with Robert and spouse, Jennifer. The trip was very productive for our collaboration, and we now understand Robert's simulation of the Earth's magnetosphere much better. He has the only such simulation that properly allows the Earth's atmosphere to fill the space around the Earth, as it interacts with the supersonic solar wind.
Aug 2002: Vacation Highlights
We added a trip to New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island to our annual Maine vacations, traveling with Bob and Jolene and the Dunn Family of Fort Fairfield, ME. We made our base at the Fundy National Park campground, and made day trips from there to Hopewell Rocks, Moncton and the Magnetic Hill(!), and Prince Edward Island. On the way to PEI was Shediac, NB, "The lobster capital of the world". And here we always thought Maine held that title. The bridge to PEI is truly spectacular and the bureau of tourism pitch on PEI is right on the mark: "when you get here, you'll understand".
May 2002: National Honor Society
Jessica was inducted into the National Honor society as her sophomore year wound up, recently. An evening ceremony was held at South River High School for the new inductees and some teacher awards. This is a big honor for Jess, but not a surprise to anyone who knows how hard she and many of her schoolmates push themselves on their schoolwork and extracurricular activies. Jess was elected second vice president of her class of about 500 this year, and was active in school newspaper and yearbook photography as well. She was also confirmed by Seton Parish this month, and the photo is actually from our party for her at that time. Congratulations, Jessica!
March 2002: The New iMac
We are pretty partial to our Macs around here (except for Jessica, but what does she know?). So, when the new iMac came out after New Years, we were sorely tempted to run out and grab one, except that they took a while to appear in the retail channels. We made it for two month or more while fighting with one of our current iMacs that won't take more memory owing (it turns out) to residual damage from our lightning strike last fall (did we ever do a news item on that?). Anyhow, the fight finally took us to the Apple Store in Tysons Corner, where they were handing out iMacs like popcorn (expensive popcorn, maybe). So there it is, with Amy at the mouse. A Unix hemisphere in the kitchen! Catch the fever .
March 2002: Glamour Girl
Whitney is
flirting with modeling as an income producing gambit. For the past few
weeks she has been making frequent trips up to a couple of schools in
Baltimore, and seems to have settled on Barbizon. Mom has been going along
and distracting the school officials. Maybe there's a spokesperson
waiting to come out in Mom as well?
Now it appears that Whitney will make weekend trips to Baltimore for
this for the next several months. This is clearly going to complicate her
summer schedule. It's a tough job but someone's got to do it, so why not
her? One of her portfolio pics is shown at the right.
Feb 2002: A Mild Winter
Sorry,
what was intended as monthly news is rapidly turning into quarterly news.
You could just wait for the annual newsletter. Well, what is there that's
newsworthy?
Tom traveled to Yosemite for a project meeting, and aspiring to Ansel
Adams-hood, took the accompanying photo out the window of the ski bus! Not
bad, eh!? Though the winter was as mild out west as it was here in the
East, there was enough snow to ski on at Badger Pass. These occasional
meetings at Yosemite have been a tradition since Tom was a graduate
student. The schedule always has free afternoons and full sessions in the
evening with very late dinner. We have to admit these meetings are rewards
to ourselves after surviving the grueling schedules of spacecraft
preparations for fixed launch dates.
