2005 Dec 23: Greetings!
Wishing you all the holiday of your dreams!
2005 Oct 15: Homecoming Dance Prep
Amy and cohorts got dolled up for the South River Homecoming Dance, after the South River Seahawks defeated the Glen Burnie Gophers for the first time in a decade. Then they were off for an overnight at Kristen's house. We hope someone got some sleep over there! Click the thumbnail to go to a slide show.
2005 June 4: Great Falls Bluebells
Spring was popping a few weeks ago (!) when we headed over to the Dulles airport and the Air and Space Museum Annex with Bob Fowler. On the way back we stopped by Great Falls Nat'l Park on the Potomac River. This is a spectacular natural area that one does not expect in flatland Washington DC, but it's there. An alarming number of people die in the Falls every year when they underestimate its power and danger. It's essential to wear flotation gear when one gets anywhere near the edge of the water or in it with a Kayak, because the rapids will put you down under in a hole if you happen to fall in. On the banks, however, it's woodsy and carpeted with wildflowers like these...
2005 Apr 9: Andrea Dworkin (1946-2005)
"The ocean does not signify anything whimsical, cheap, romantic, or self-indulgent. It signifies the true mysteries, not the mystifying ones. It signifies the light years between galaxies, as well as one's tie to everything on earth. It signifies one's tie to the enormity of being, to the mystery of this universe -- stars, moon, sun, black holes, rings around Saturn. It makes one aware that this universe is a tapestry of the most awesome magnificence. It does compel awe. It has always been to me, the ocean, overwhelming, monstrous, deep, dark, green and black, so foreign that it requires respect, silence, humility. It is boundless and deep, no human sense of time can circumscribe it, it rumbles with cavernous sounds, it is filled with grotesque forms, luminous colors, shapes that defy imagination. All of the life in it is menacing, compelling, exquisite, with nothing consoling."
~ Andrea Dworkin (September 26, 1946 - April 9, 2005), 1980 "First Love"
2005 Apr 1: April Fool!
What do you think? Finding water on different regions on Mars has implications for understanding its complex geologic history, the possible existence of past life and the sustenance of potential future astronauts. Many space missions have taken photographs of the surface of the red planet, and some of them might show a subtle clue pointing to water on Mars that has been missed. By close inspection of images, following curiosity, applying scientific principles, applying knowledge about features on the Martian surface, and applying principles of planetary geology, such clues might be brought to light. In the meantime, happy April Fool's Day from the folks at Astronomy Picture of the Day.
